Visual diaries: 10 artists books

September 2023

Bromfield Gallery | Boston, MA

Visual Diaries: 10 Artists Books will be on view at the Bromfield Gallery in the SOWA arts district in Boston in September of 2023. Roberts will exhibit “Ranunculus Repens Hide in the Flowers”. This book is a reflection of the sensation of recording and dodging reality. Black ink drawings become a stream of consciousness as they merge into a constructed flutter book to allow pages to see each other. The images are linear outlines of flora, mapping, and words marking the artist's mind.

The Mauser Foundation Eco Arts Residency | Parrita, Costa Rica

Cynthia will be headed to Costa Rica January 2024 for an artist residency at the Mauser Foundation. The Mauser Foundation Eco House offers harmony with nature as a foundation for sustainable living. This core belief connects artists to an environment where creating is fostered by the surrounding nature as well as living in balance with it. Cynthia anticipates working on a series of paintings to be exhibited in June 2024, as well as capturing footage for her ongoing choreographic/visual collaboration, Armations.

Mutualism SOLO EXHIBITION

NOVEMBER 2 – 27, 2022

Bromfield Gallery

450 Harrison Avenue, Boston

On view through November 2022 paintings in a solo exhibition entitled Mutualism. Roberts describes the work in this show, “The works here reflect the interdependence of life forms. I am inspired by travel and living in tropical settings; the ocean and its powerful but intricate ways; and the interdependent ecosystems of Upstate New York where I live.

I use a gray linework as a way to depict these embedded life forms as interchangeable in their meaning, but as drawings and in their ecosystems, they are highly specific and articulated as such. The forms are immersed in and emerge from washes of saturated color.

The smaller paintings emphasize the extraction of these specific elements for examination, and then immerse them back into the depths of paint as a proxy for ocean, for air, for that which surrounds them.

Mutualism is defined as ‘the doctrine that mutual dependence is necessary to social well-being’ and in biology as ‘symbiosis that is beneficial to both organisms involved’. I use the oyster as a representative of the ecosystem engineer that it is, along with other motifs including various plant forms. Mutualism is a description of how I see our moment in time as humans, and the challenge to observe this moment and act if we choose.
